According to a new research by Strategy Analytics, the one billion smartphones milestone was finally reached this year. One billion smartphones means one in seven people on the globe have a mobile device that can access the Internet, although the true figure may be lower due to some people that own two or more smartphones.
“Most of the world does not yet own a smartphone and there remains huge scope for future growth, particularly in emerging markets such as China, India and Africa” said Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics.
It took 16 years from the first smartphone – the Nokia Communicator, to this day, to reach the milestone, but Strategy Analytics also states that the two billion milestone could be reached in less than three years from now.
