Posterous is closing down

Posterous was started in 2008 and currently hosts about 4 million users. Bought last year in March by Twitter, Posterous will no longer be available either to view or to edit by the 30th of April this year. For those of you who chose the blogging service over Tumblr, you can backup your content and move it to another blogging service such as WordPress (WordPress offers import option for Posterous archives).

One of the downsides of this blogging platform closing is the number of broken links that will appear on a lot of websites that linked to Posterous content – alternatively, you can pay $5 a month and use Posthaven to keep all your links intact.

An increasing number of social media gurus and content marketers recommend using social networks instead a website of their own. Using a Facebook Page together with a Twitter account sounds a lot more cheap than maintaining a website or a blog. But they keep ignoring that silent voice in their head saying – You don’t own the content! Well, this is a clear case of loosing what you may have built in years.
